The Cathedral of St. Philip - Atlanta, GA

Welcome Julia Mitchener!

An article from the Cathedral Times
by the Rev. George M. Maxwell, Jr.

You may have seen her around.

You may have heard her preach or experienced her celebrate a Eucharist or preside over a funeral.

You may have watched her tell the story in a Godly Play classroom; or dance with her children, Sanders and Margaret, at our Shrove Tuesday festivities; or listen to her husband, Jack, play the organ in the Nave.

You may have just run into her smile in the hallway and wondered who she was.

There is joyfulness in her presence that catches your attention.

Well, her name is the Rev. Julia B. Mitchener and we are delighted to announce that you are going to have a chance to get to know her better.

Julia has been worshipping with us ever since Jack joined our music staff as Organist and Artist-in-Residence a little more than a year ago. Unwilling to let her light hide under a basket, we have prevailed upon her to take on more official duties from time to time. The time has come to formalize that arrangement.

Julia is joining our staff as Priest Associate for Children’s Ministries.

As many of you have already witnessed, Julia brings a mature and seasoned vocation of priesthood to us, and an excellent preaching style.

She is also interested in assisting with our Godly Play programs.

Although she will only be with us part-time, we expect that she will do the other things that priests do at the Cathedral: preach, celebrate, do weekday services, make occasional hospital visitations, and when possible preside over funerals and pastoral offices, too.

You might be interested to know that Julia grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and studied at Davidson College, Yale University, and Yale Divinity School. She served as the Priest Associate at Christ Church, Macon, and previously as the Associate Rector at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and as the Associate Rector at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.

You won’t understand our good fortune, though, until you meet her!

So, please join me in welcoming Julia Mitchener to the Cathedral as the newest member of our staff.
