A BLESSING FOR THE PEACHTREE ROAD RACE
4 July 2006

The Very Reverend Sam Candler
Dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip
Atlanta, Georgia

At 6:45 am, on the Fourth of July, the Very Reverend Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip, in Atlanta, delivered this invocation for the 37th annual Peachtree Road Race.

Blessings to our gorgeous God of the morning, who has created this day for wonder and for joy, for challenge and excitement, for fellowship and fun.

Blessings to each athlete today, to everyone who meets this course with grace and fun.

Blessings to our organizers and officials. Blessings to our police officers and safety enforcers, to our city workers and maintenance folks, to our volunteers and to our spectators. And may a special blessing be upon Julia Emmons this day as she finishes a grand course.

God blesses all of America today, all of us who represent God’s amazing and diverse creation. God blesses our talents, our gifts, and our community.

May this morning be safe. May this morning be joyful. May this morning model our every morning, as we rise every day to meet wonder, to meet opportunity, and to meet hope.

May this morning be blessed, by the God of grace and strength, by the God of goodness and beauty, in whose name we pray.

AMEN.

The Very Reverend Samuel G. Candler
