Judson Child was larger than life. In fact, he was known affectionately as “His purple mountain majesty.” He was a lover of souls: he loved God, he loved God’s people, he loved the Church and he loved this cathedral. He spent many days in the Hall of Bishops as a priest, as a bishop and after his retirement, because he loved being with the people who were gathered here. For him, it was the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. How fitting that this place be named in memory of and in thanksgiving for the life of Charles Judson Child.

— The Rt. Rev. Frank Allan Eighth Bishop of Atlanta

A Great Hall for a Great Man

Upon his death in January 2004, Bishop Child left a legacy of warmth, humor and generosity. The Cathedral of St. Philip now pays tribute to this memorable man by proposing the naming of Child Hall. The goal is to raise $1.5 million by spring 2007 and then gather near Judson’s birthday, April 23, for a celebration and unveiling of Child Hall. Through your generosity, this memorial for a remarkable man, will become a reality.
